Seven Ponds Gets Four County Grant
Will help renovate its Wildflower Garden
January 4, 2007
DRYDEN TWP. – Seven Ponds nature Center has received a grant for $5,000 from the Four County Foundation to help fund improvements in the Woodland Wildflower garden.
The total cost for the project is $10,300, but Owen Tree Service has offered a contribution of $1,070 in services, and an additional $4,230 has been pledged by Seven Ponds members, says Mike Champagne, director.
The Woodland Wildflower Garden started in 1983 with plantings of shade-loving wildflowers that grow in southeastern Michigan, in an area southwest of the main building.
In the years since, many plants were added, along with a split-rail fence, pathways and a rock wall, notes a news release form Seven Ponds. Plants include trillium, jack-in-the-pulpit, mayapple and ferns. Unfortunately, in recent years, Dutch Elm disease and the Emerald Ash Borer has been responsible for tree die-off, and white-tail deer in and around the garden center have attacked plants.
The grant will help the center remove non-native and dying trees from the garden and place a new fence around the site to keep the deer away. Other improvements will include adding native wildflowers and plants, new signs and widened pathways.
Work already has begun and will continue through the winter and into spring. The project is scheduled for completion in June 2007.
Seven Ponds is a 468-acre nature sanctuary and environmental education center. It served about 10,000 young people alone in the past year. The address is 3854 Crawford Road, For details, call 810-796-3200.
