TREE REMOVAL
When you have a declining, mature tree on your property it hurts to consider removing the tree. Trees are beautiful and valuable assets to our landscapes, but there are instances when tree removal is necessary. Sometimes the hazards present in the tree outweigh the benefits of the tree.
There are many reasons why it might be necessary to remove a tree:
• Tree roots may be causing damage to a sidewalk, driveway, house, or patio.
• The tree may have been damaged by a tree disease or insect pests.
• Construction activity may have caused too much stress to the tree root system.
•A tree fungus may be causing decay in the tree roots or tree trunk.
• The tree is too large for where it was planted.
Many Michigan tree care services claim to be tree experts, but there are differences worth checking into. A professional tree removal service should be comfortable discussing the following items:
Make sure the tree company you hire is insured for property damage and has workman’s compensation. If requested, a tree services insurance company will send you a copy of their workman's compensation insurance.
Make sure the person recommending the tree removal is an ISA Certified Arborist. To become an ISA Certified Arborist an individual must have experience working for a tree care service or a college / university degree and pass a comprehensive written examination with a score of 72 % or higher. Certification is granted for three years and must be maintained by attending continuing education seminars on tree care topics or retaking the Certified Arborist test.
Does the tree removal price include removal of the tree brush and wood from the site? If the wood is to be left on site will it be cut to a specified length? Such details should be clearly indicated on a written on the tree removal estimate form.
If stump grinding is going to be done find out if grinding of tree roots on the surface is included in the tree removal price quote or if stump grinding is a separate cost.
Finding out who is responsible for such items, and determining the qualifications of the tree service, will help the tree owner make an accurate comparison when receiving a tree removal price.
Urban trees are frequently located in crowded locations. Houses, garages, pools, and other landscape plantings are often in close proximity to where the tree removal will take place. A tree growing in a manicured lawn sometimes need to be taken down in small enough pieces to prevent significant damage to the lawn. In situations such as this it is necessary for the tree climbing arborist to use lowering ropes or to cut the tree in small pieces. Lowering ropes can be used to guide tree branches or tree wood to the ground or to stop uncontrolled falls of a tree branch or tree trunk. If the tree is small enough, or there is sufficient open space, then felling the entire tree may be an option.
Several communities in Macomb and Oakland County in Michigan have a tree ordinance that forbids the removal of trees on city right-of-ways without a permit. The city forester or city arborist will probably need to know why you want to remove the tree. There may be penalties if you remove a tree in the city right-of-way without permission.
Disposal of the brush and smaller wood is usually done by a tree service using a brush chipper that will turn the tree debris into mulch. In many cases this mulch can be used elsewhere in the landscape to help control weeds or create a walking surface in a wooded area.
Some tree owners will also contract to have the tree service grind the stump after the tree is removed. Using a stump grinder is the fastest way to get rid of a tree stump. When the stump grinding is complete all that remains will be a pile of wood chips. Some tree service companies will haul these wood chips away, but the tree service will usually need to charge extra if you add the hauling away of wood chips.
A number of factors are considered when determining a tree removal cost:
• The size of the tree to be removed, and its location on a property, is often the most important factor in the cost to remove a tree. In most cases a mature tree is going to cost more to remove than a young tree because there is more tree debris for the tree service to dispose of.
• The fate of the tree debris can also play a major role in the tree removal cost. Leaving the wood on site will usually reduce the cost of a tree removal, but may leave the tree owner with a lot of extra work. You will need to determine if you want the tree service to do all the work or if you are willing to do some of the work in exchange for a lower tree removal cost.
• The tree structure may add to the cost of a tree removal if the tree branches extend over several obstacles in the yard. Removing trees over houses, garages, or existing landscaping requires more work for the tree climbing arborist.
•The tree species can also play a role in the tree removal cost. It is much quicker, for instance, to run Maple tree branches through a brush chipper than it is to chip Locust tree branches.
Tree planting to replace the removed tree should be considered whenever a tree is removed. The tree removal company may even be able to help you decide what tree species to plant. The mature size of a replacement tree should be known before deciding on what kind of tree to plant. If the eventual height or width of the new tree is going to interfere with overhead wires, garages, or your house then you should consider an alternate tree species. If you look around your neighborhood you can probably find numerous example of trees that were planted too close to a house or driveway or are in the wrong location for some other reason. Consulting with a Certified Arborist before planting a tree can help avoid costly mistakes when deciding what kind of tree to plant.
