If you're a homeowner in Royal Oak, Michigan, with boxwood shrubs in your landscape, you may have encountered the frustrating problem of boxwood leafminers. These tiny insect pests burrow into the boxwood leaves, leaving unsightly trails and causing leaf discoloration and long-term damage. Fortunately, there are several effective ways to treat and prevent boxwood leafminer infestations.

The first step in controlling boxwood leafminers is identifying the signs early. Look for discolored, distorted leaves and small, serpentine trails. This is a clear indication you have a boxwood leafminer infestation.

A foliar treatment can be sprayed if the adult insects have not laid eggs yet. However, the most effective treatment is the application of a systemic insecticide. This type of insecticide is absorbed by the plant and will target the larvae that are feeding inside the leaves.

Regular maintenance is also essential in preventing future infestations. For a localized infestation, trim away any affected leaves. Ensure your boxwoods are well-watered during July and August and properly fertilized to reduce stress and keep them healthy. Additionally, consider using horticultural oils in late fall and/or early spring to suffocate any eggs left behind.

By staying vigilant and using the right treatment methods at the right time you can protect your boxwood shrubs from boxwood leafminer damage and keep your landscape flourishing through all four of Michigan’s seasons.
