How do I keep my neighbors weeds out of my lawn?

Let’s face it! All it takes is that one neighbor who doesn’t seem to really care about the condition or overall look of their lawn to offset the money, time and work you have put into yours, right? Have you even gone so far as to pluck their weeds out a few feet into their lawn along your shared property lines? Let’s look at some possible solutions to this pesky problem.

Diplomacy– Don’t make the assumption that your neighbor is selfish and flat out doesn’t care about their lawn or yours. Sometimes, it can all simply come down to know how, physical ability or finances that prevent your neighbor from keeping up with the high quality look your lawn has. Speak with your neighbor and let them know what your concerns are. Find out what their circumstances are and be prepared to offer your assistance in reaching a common goal.

Barriers Work– Building and installing a fence or barrier will greatly help the issue of weeds. Make sure that the barrier you choose has as few gaps as possible. This can be a costly way to solve the problem but it is a very effective one. Also, talk with your neighbors and let them know what you’re planning and take in consideration any issues they may have with this solution.

Landscape Property Lines– Another solution that could be of interest is to landscape along your property line. This is a great option if you prefer not to build a barrier or your neighbor has strong objections to a barrier. Landscaping can not only solve the weed issue but it’s also a very beautiful way to solve the problem. Once installed, the options for plants, flowers and shrubs is almost endless and you and your neighbors will feel gratified. Don’t forget the mulch!

Pre-emergent Herbicides– Most weed seeds germinate in early spring. This will be the perfect time to use pre-emergent herbicides. If you want an all natural product, corn gluten is a great option. This product naturally disrupts the root development of weeds. Apply corn gluten at a rate of 15 pounds per 1,000 sq feet with a push spreader.

Health is Key– The absolute best way to prevent your neighbor’s weeds from creeping over into your lawn is to help it be as healthy as possible. If your lawn is dense and healthy, weeds will have a very difficult time popping up or creeping over from anywhere. Watering is a huge key. Measuring your watering, especially in the hot, dry months are a huge factor. Water 1” to 2” inches per week. Mowing is equally important. Keep your lawn mowed at 3” to 4” inches will shade the sunlight that is vital for weeds to grow.
