Occasional pruning on a crabapple tree is an important task if you want to maintain its health and aesthetic appeal. Although they can be pruned any time of the year, one of the best times to trim crabapple trees is during late winter or early spring, just before new growth begins. This timing allows for the tree pruning arborist to look at the tree’s structure without leaves obstructing the view, making it simpler to identify which branches need pruning or removal.

When pruning, an arborist will usually focus on several key objectives:

• Remove dead or diseased branches: This helps prevent the spread of disease and encourages healthy growth.

• Thin out crowded branches: Ensuring adequate space between branches improves air circulation, reducing the risk of fungal infections.

• Eliminate suckers and water sprouts: Suckers grow from the base and can drain energy from the tree, while water sprouts, which usually grow from the trunk or lower branches, can be more susceptible to disease or insect attack.

To effectively prune, we use clean, sharp tools to minimize damage. Make cuts at the branch collar, which is the swollen area where the branch meets the trunk, to promote faster healing. Avoid heavy pruning; ideally, remove no more than 25% of the canopy in a single year to prevent stress on the tree.

If you wish to preserve spring blooms, consider waiting until after flowering to prune, as this will avoid cutting off flower buds, which are formed on last year's growth.

Regular maintenance, performed by a knowledgeable company like Owen Tree Service, will help ensure your crabapple tree remains healthy through Michigan four seasons.
