For the handy Dryden homeowner, learning to sharpen your own mower blades can be a valuable skill. Not only does it save money, but it also ensures your mower is always in top condition for tackling our lush Michigan lawns.

A dull mower blade tears, instead of cutting the grass blades cleanly. This uses more fuel and can make the lawn more susceptible to a variety of lawn diseases. Another problem with cutting the lawn with a dull blade is that the grass plants will be more vulnerable to drought stress.

The best time to sharpen your blades is when your mower is due for an oil change, typically every spring. This allows you to kill two maintenance birds with one stone. However, depending on your lawn size and mowing frequency, you may need to sharpen your mower blade more often.

To sharpen your mower blades, you'll need a file, a vice, and safety equipment like gloves and eye protection. For safety’s sake, always disconnect the spark plug before removing the blades. Use the file to follow the existing angle of the blade's edge, typically about 45 degrees. Aim for an edge that's sharp enough to cut grass blades but not razor-sharp, as this can damage the blade.

Blade balance is key aspect when sharpening mower blades. After sharpening, check that the blade is evenly weighted by balancing it on a nail or screwdriver. If one side dips, file a bit more off the heavier side.

By mastering this skill, you'll always be ready to give your lawn the clean, healthy cut it deserves. Plus, you'll have the satisfaction of maintaining your own equipment. Just remember, if you're ever unsure if you’re doing this correctly, it's always best to consult a professional.
