The last Friday in April is Michigan’s annual celebration of Arbor Day. This observance is in place to encourage homeowners and communities to plant trees and think about the care and maintenance of their existing trees.

If you are considering planting a tree the first step is to decide what kind of tree you want to plant and where to plant it. This website page will help in this first, and most important, step in the tree planting process: https://www.arborday.org/planning-selection-location

Your new tree probably won’t need any fertilization for the first year, however, it doesn't hurt to use root stimulants like mycorrhizae-enhanced root treatments. Learn more about mycorrhizae here: https://www.owentree.com/how-mycorrhizae-fungi-can-help-bloomfield-hills-landscapes/

Protecting landscape trees from diseases is all too common for certain tree species in Michigan. When planting a new tree your local arborist can help by letting you know if the tree you are considering is prone to any tree diseases. See this article to learn more about the two main types of tree diseases: https://www.owentree.com/protecting-your-urban-trees-from-diseases/

Insect control and fertilizing established trees and shrubs should also be on your radar if you want to keep your landscape as healthy as possible. Here’s an article covering the basics of how a plant health care company can help you maintain your landscape trees and shrubs: https://www.owentree.com/owen-tree-service-plant-health-care-nurturing-milford-s-green-spaces/

When thinking about your landscape maintenance, don’t forget about your shrubs. They are susceptible to a variety of diseases and insect pests. A relatively new pest in Michigan is the Box Tree Moth. This has been decimating unprotected boxwood shrubs in southeast Michigan over the last few years.
