Cedar-Hawthorn rust is a common fungal disease affecting hawthorn trees in Elba, Michigan.
Caused by the fungus Gymnosporangium globosum, this tree disease requires two hosts to complete its life cycle - hawthorns and junipers. In the spring, spores from infected junipers travel to hawthorn trees just as the trees are starting to develop new leaves. The first sign of infection is yellow-orange spots on the hawthorn leaves. For Elba residents, identifying the disease early is crucial. Look for bright orange spots on hawthorn leaves, fruits, and occasionally twigs.
Severe infections from cedar-hawthorn rust can lead to premature leaf drop and weakened trees over time. While the disease rarely kills mature trees, it can significantly impact their aesthetic value and overall health.
To manage cedar-hawthorn rust in Elba:
1. Consider removing nearby junipers, though this may not be feasible, or desirable, in many landscapes. This is also not an option if the juniper plants are on a neighboring property.
2. Choose rust-resistant hawthorn varieties when planting new trees. A local tree nursery can give you available options for rust-resistant plants.
3. Improve air circulation around trees through proper pruning. Thinning the canopy will help leaves dry off quicker which makes it harder for the disease spores to infect the leaves.
4. Apply fungicides preventatively in spring, starting when flower buds break. Two treatments will provide a minimum level of control, but three treatments would be optimal.
By understanding this disease and taking proactive steps, Elba residents can help protect their hawthorn trees and maintain the beauty of their landscapes.
