Necrotic Ring Spot is a lawn disease that often affects turfgrass, especially sod lawns, in Troy, Michigan, during the summer months. This fungal disease is caused by the Leptosphaeria korrae fungus and primarily targets Kentucky bluegrass, though it can occasionally affect other cool-season grasses. Recognizing Necrotic Ring Spot early is key to preventing severe damage to your lawn.

Symptoms include circular patches of dead grass, with live grass in the center of the circle. These patches can range from small to large and may be more noticeable during dry periods or after the grass is shorter from lawn mowing. The disease thrives in areas with clay soil, poor drainage, compacted soil, and excessive thatch buildup.

To treat Necrotic Ring Spot, it's important to begin with proper lawn care practices. Aerate your lawn to improve soil drainage and reduce compaction. If there is a high thatch layer, I would recommend aerating in both spring and fall.

A lawn fertilization program should be set up for the entire growing season. Fertilizing with a balanced, slow-release nitrogen fertilizer will strengthen the grass and promote recovery.

Fungicides can also be effective when applied at the first signs of the disease. Because this is a root-related disease, more than one fungicide treatment will probably be necessary to bring the disease under control. Be sure to choose a fungicide labeled for Necrotic Ring Spot and follow the application instructions carefully.

In addition to fertilization and fungicide treatments, improving irrigation practices is a key aspect to controlling Necrotic Ring Spot. A light, midday watering, in addition to normal watering, will cool down the turf during the hottest part of the day. This helps mitigate damage from the fungus.

By taking proactive steps, you can control Necrotic Ring Spot and keep your Troy lawn green and disease-free. If you notice circular dead spots in your lawn with green grass in the middle, give us a call at 800-724-6680 and we can set up a program to bring this disease under control.
