Heat tracking on a drought stressed lawn in Clarkston. | Tom Morgan, Owen Tree & Lawn Care
Heat and humidity can be brutal on lawns, but a few smart mowing habits can dramatically reduce lawn stress and keep your grass looking thick and healthy. When temperatures spike, cool-season grass plants are already stressed, so the way you mow the lawn matters just as much as how you fertilize and water.
What are heat tracks?
During hot, dry weather, you may notice tire marks or footprints appearing a day or two after mowing or walking on the lawn. These “heat tracks” form when equipment or even foot traffic passes over grass that is close to wilting or already wilted. The added pressure crushes stressed blades, causing pale or brown stripes and patches to show up as the turf tries to recover.
To reduce this risk, avoid mowing during the hottest part of the afternoon when the sun is most intense and the turf is under maximum stress. Aim to mow in the early morning or later in the evening, when temperatures are lower and the grass has a better chance to bounce back.
Mow high to protect your lawn
When the heat is on, taller grass is your lawn’s best defense. Raising your mowing height helps shade the soil, conserve moisture, and keep roots cooler, all of which improve heat and drought tolerance. Many homeowners are tempted to cut shorter, thinking less leaf area means less work for the roots, but the opposite is true.
Grass blades act like solar panels for photosynthesis. If you remove too much leaf tissue, the plant must burn extra energy to regrow leaves instead of building deeper, stronger roots. Keeping the mower set at the highest recommended setting for your grass type allows it to capture more sunlight, stay greener, and recover faster from heat and traffic.
Partner proper mowing with professional lawn fertilization
Proper mowing and timing go hand in hand with a balanced lawn fertilization program. Slow, steady nutrition helps turf handle stress, repair heat tracks more quickly, and maintain color and density through the toughest weeks of summer. When you combine high mowing, cooler mowing times, and expert fertilization, you give your lawn every advantage to stay thick, green and healthy all season long.
