Protecting Your Landscape: Effective Solutions for Insect and Disease Control

Insect and disease pests can pose significant threats to the health of your trees and shrubs. The Certified Arborists at Owen Tree Service are equipped to identify these issues and provide effective solutions, often through methods such as spraying. Tree and shrub spraying is a reliable and widely used approach to control pests and maintain the health of your landscape.

Owen Tree Service offers several pest control options, including tree spraying, soil injections, and tree trunk injections. Depending on the situation, the best solution may involve one method or a combination of these techniques. Our ISA Certified Arborists use an integrated pest management approach to ensure your trees and shrubs stay healthy and pest-free.

Insect Pests

Not all insects are harmful—some are beneficial, aiding in pollination or controlling harmful pests. However, certain insects can damage trees and shrubs by defoliating them, sucking their sap, or boring into their trunks and branches, disrupting growth and weakening the plant's structure.

Insect pests are categorized by their feeding methods

Chewing Insects

These pests eat leaves, flowers, buds, and twigs, leaving uneven edges or skeletonized leaves. Beetles, moths, and caterpillar larvae are common examples.

Sucking Insects

These insect pests insert their beak into the tissues of tree and shrub leaves, twigs, branches or fruit and then feed on the plant’s juices.

Boring Insects

Tree borers inhabit the area just below the bark. Tree sprays may reduce infestation, while tree trunk injections might help once borers have already entered the tree.

Disease Pests

Disease development requires three conditions, known as the disease triangle:

  1. Presence of a pathogen
  2. A susceptible plant
  3. Suitable environmental conditions

Some landscape plants are more vulnerable to diseases than others. For example, Crabapple varieties vary widely in their susceptibility to common diseases like Apple Scab. Serious diseases, such as Dutch Elm Disease or Oak Wilt, can kill trees, while others weaken plants, making them more susceptible to other stresses.
