WHY DO I HAVE MOLES IN MY LAWN?

You have spent a lot of money and time on your lawn. Your lawn looks beautiful and lush and your lawn is the talk of the neighborhood. Then one day you come home and there are mounds and tunnels going all through it. You have Moles! But why do you have Moles? Most of the time, people don’t even know they have moles until they see the damage. Here are some ways to identify moles and how to control them.

The Signs of Moles! – Moles are no bigger than your average potato. They have a pointed muzzle, really tiny eyes and they use flipper-like feet for tunneling through soil. Their diet consists of insects, grubs and earthworms. They are nocturnal and spend nearly every minute of their lives underground. Even though the surface damage is an obvious clue they are present, they can be present well before you see this damage. Controlling their food source isn’t usually an option because their diet is largely earthworms and earthworms provide a lot of beneficial services for our lawns.

Can Moles cause any other damage? – There are other pests that will use the tunnels that moles create. Mice and Voles will use the tunnels as they munch off of roots and seeds. The biggest issue moles create is in the lawn condition itself. The tunnels and mounds are not only unpleasant to look at, but it also damages the grass and its root system.
