Girdled roots are a common yet often unnoticed issue in many Fenton landscapes that can severely affect tree health. This condition happens when roots encircle the trunk, restricting proper growth. Instead of spreading outward, the roots end up strangling the trunk of the tree, limiting the tree’s access to water and nutrients. Trees that came from the nursery in containers or trees planted in clay soils are particularly prone to develop gridling roots. Trees planted too low, with the flare of the trunk below the soil surface, are also more likely to develop girdling roots over time.

A highly effective way to tackle girdled roots is with an Air Spade, a specialized tool that uses pressurized air to safely displace soil without damaging the tree’s root system. Unlike traditional digging methods, the Air Spade gently loosens the earth around the roots, allowing arborists to identify and address girdling roots without harming the roots of the tree.

Using an Air Spade, an arborist can carefully expose the tree’s root structure. Once revealed, any roots that are circling the trunk or constricting growth can be cut or redirected to allow for better root development and growth. After the roots are freed, the excavated soil is replaced, giving the tree trunk room to expand and flourish. A follow up fertilization for the tree has been shown to be beneficial to aid in root recovery.

Taking action early to fix girdled roots can dramatically enhance a tree’s health, boosting its ability to absorb essential resources and reducing long-term stress. By regularly inspecting for signs of girdling and using tools like the Air Spade, you can help your trees thrive and grow strong for many years to come.
