A common threat to Elba, Michigan pine trees is the white pine weevil (Pissodes strobi). This native insect poses a significant threat to various pine species, particularly eastern white pine. It’s not unusual to find white pine weevil activity on blue spruce trees, as well.

The white pine weevil's life cycle begins in early spring when overwintering adults emerge from the leaf litter. As temperatures warm, typically in April, female weevils lay eggs in small pits they create just below the terminal buds of pine leaders. Upon hatching, larvae bore into the bark and feed downward, disrupting nutrient flow and causing the characteristic "shepherd's crook" appearance of wilting leaders.

Signs of white pine weevil infestation include:

1. Wilting and browning of terminal leaders
2. Pitch flow from feeding sites
3. Crooks in the top of your pine or spruce trees

White pine weevil management strategies for Elba landscapes include:

• Regular tree inspections, especially in spring
• Pruning and destroying infested leaders before July
• Applying preventative insecticides in early April

While chemical control can be effective, timing is crucial. Treatments should be applied to terminal leaders in early to mid-April before egg-laying begins. For a more sustainable approach, maintaining overall tree health and planting resistant evergreen varieties can help minimize damage.

By understanding the white pine weevil's lifecycle and implementing proactive management strategies, Elba homeowners can protect their trees and preserve the beauty of their landscape.
