Oak Wilt: A Growing Threat to Commerce Township's Trees
| Nov 29, 2025
Safest time to prune oak trees in Michigan.
Oak wilt, a devastating fungal disease, is posing a significant risk to oak trees in Commerce Township and surrounding areas. This lethal disease, caused by the fungus Bretziella fagacearum, can kill oak trees in a matter of weeks, particularly those in the red oak family. The disease spreads rapidly through two primary methods:
1. Underground via interconnected root systems
2. Overland by sap-feeding beetles attracted to fresh wounds on oak trees
Symptoms of oak wilt include:
• Sudden browning and wilting of leaves, often resembling a coffee stain
• Premature leaf-drop during summer months
• Formation of fungal mats or "pressure pads" beneath the bark in infected red oaks
• An ISA Certified Arborist can look at, but must send a sample in to be tested for sure
Prevention is key in combating oak wilt. Here are some crucial steps to protect our local oak population:
1. It’s best to avoid pruning oak trees between April and mid-September, when the disease is most active. The safest time to prune oaks is November to March.
2. If pruning is necessary during this period, immediately cover wounds with wound sealer or latex paint.
3. Do not move firewood between counties, as this can spread the disease.
4. Be vigilant and monitor your oak trees for signs of infection.
If you suspect oak wilt on your property, it's crucial to act quickly. Contact Owen Tree and we will send out one of our ISA Certified Arborists for proper diagnosis and, if possible, treatment options.
