Spruce Needlecast Disease
| Dec 25, 2024
This fungal infection, caused by Rhizosphaera kalkhoffii, is becoming increasingly prevalent in our area, affecting both ornamental and native spruce species. Needlecast manifests as a gradual browning and shedding of older needles, starting from the bottom of the tree and progressing upward. For Almont's tree owners, early detection is crucial. Look for these telltale signs:
- Discolored needles turning brown or purple
- Needle loss, creating a thinned canopy
- Black, pinhead-sized fruiting bodies on infected needles
While all spruce species are susceptible to spruce needlecast, Colorado blue spruce is particularly vulnerable. Stressed trees, whether from drought, poor planting practices, or other factors, are more likely to succumb to this disease. For Almont residents concerned about their spruces, several management strategies can help:
- Improve air circulation by proper spacing and pruning
- Plant in sunny locations to promote quick drying of needles
- Apply fungicides starting in late spring
- Consider resistant varieties for new plantings
- Fertilizing to promote new growth & maintain tree health
Fungicide treatments can be effective but require precise timing and multiple applications to protect the new growth as its emerging. For best results, consult with one of our ISA Certified Arborists that is familiar with spruce needlecast and we can develop a spray program for your trees.
By staying vigilant and implementing proactive care, Almont's spruce owners can help preserve the beauty and health of these iconic evergreen trees, ensuring they continue to grace our landscapes for years to come.
