I have several dead branches on my Oak Tree in Fenton, Michigan. Could it have Oak Wilt Disease?

While Oak Wilt is a concern in the area, it is relatively rare compared to an insect called the two-lined chestnut borer (Agrilus bilineatus). The two-lined chestnut borer is much more common in the Genesee County area.

In Fenton oak trees face a growing threat from the two-lined chestnut borer, a beetle causing severe damage to local oak populations. This destructive pest, known for affecting hardwood forests, has become a significant issue in the region.

The larvae of the two-lined chestnut borer feed under the bark of oak trees, burrowing into the cambium layer, where they block the flow of water and nutrients. This leads to tree stress, weakening, and eventual death. Though the pest generally targets already weakened trees, the increasing frequency of droughts and other environmental pressures is making oaks in Fenton more susceptible to two-lined chestnut borer.

While two-lined chestnut borer outbreaks have been reported across Michigan, their impact in Fenton is particularly concerning. Local oak trees, essential for the area’s ecosystem and beauty, are being devastated, threatening biodiversity and wildlife habitats. In addition to their ecological role, oak trees provide shade, enhance air quality, and contribute to the region’s beauty.

To address this infestation, experts suggest timely action, including insecticide treatments, boosting tree health, and pruning deadwood. Tree owners in Fenton should monitor their oaks for signs such as thinning canopies, dying upper branches, fallen dead branches, and bark discoloration.
