Proper watering is critical for the establishment of newly planted trees in Otter Lake, MI. The region's climate, with its warm summers and variable rainfall, necessitates a thoughtful approach to tree irrigation.

For newly planted trees, a good rule of thumb is to apply 15 gallons of water per watering slowly, using a soaker hose or a regular hose set to a slow trickle. This deep watering encourages roots to grow downward, making your tree more resilient to drought conditions.

The frequency of watering a newly planted tree depends on several factors, including soil type, tree size, tree species, and the time of the year the planting is done. In general, water deeply once or twice a week during the first growing season. Otter Lake’s clay-heavy soils can retain moisture, so it's important to check soil moisture before watering to avoid oversaturation.

Mulching around the tree can help retain soil moisture and reduce watering needs. Apply a 2-4 inch layer of organic mulch in a circle around the tree, extending to the drip line, but keep the mulch away from the trunk to prevent fungal growth on the trunk of the tree.

During extended dry periods, even established trees may need supplemental watering. Look for signs of drought stress, such as wilting, early fall color, or premature leaf drop, and water as needed.

By adopting proper watering techniques, Otter Lake residents can ensure their newly planted trees establish strong root systems and thrive in their new environments, contributing to your landscape’s beauty and value for years to come.
