The Bonus That Comes With A Crabgrass Control Treatment

Crabgrass control is one of the first lawn treatments done in the spring by professional lawn care services. If left unchecked, crabgrass can quickly spread and crowd out your desirable grass plants. If crabgrass is really thick in a lawn there might even be grass clumps after the lawn is cut, further diminishing the appeal of your yard. If that’s not bad enough, did you know crabgrass seeds can remain viable in the soil for up to 15 years. Yikes!
So, I think we can agree that controlling crabgrass is important if you want to have even just an acceptable looking lawn. Now, here’s the good news. Not only will you will be controlling crabgrass by having a pre-emergent application done, you will also be stopping a lot of other weeds from germinating, too. Yes, pre-emergent herbicides can control a wide variety of weeds beyond crabgrass.
Some additional weeds that can be effectively managed with pre-emergent treatments include:
• Foxtails
• Barnyard grass
• Spurge
• Knotweed
• Purslane
• Plantain
• Goosegrass
• Dandelions
• Chickweed
• Clover
• Thistle
• Creeping bentgrass
• Oxalis
• Bittercress
• Poa annua
• Persian speedwell
Pre-emergent herbicides are particularly effective against annual weeds that reproduce by seeds. However, it's important to note that different pre-emergent products may target specific types of weeds. For example, some are more effective on grassy weeds, while others work better on broadleaf weeds. Products containing prodiamine or dithiopyr are often effective against a broad spectrum of weeds.
So, does this mean if you have a crabgrass control application done you won’t have any crabgrass and none of the weeds listed above? Well, I wish that was true. There will always be some “escapes”, and no weed control product is 100% effective. But if you can stop even a percentage of these weeds from germinating you will be ahead of the game when it comes to any post-emergent weed control that will need to be done.
